Brain Brawl 2018 - In Review

I didn’t know what to expect for my very first Brain Brawl.

In my first year with the Montgomery Education Foundation, I was tasked with coordinating and executing the sixth annual Brain Brawl.

From January to November, it has been a journey.  Team and Sponsor recruitment; working out logistics; developing a communications plan; sending out more emails than I can count and so much more—planning a fundraiser takes a lot of work, but it is worth every second.

With 30 registered teams, nine sponsors, six judges, a food vendor, a host of volunteers and the host of all hosts—Tonya Terry, Brain Brawl 2018 was ready to begin.

My coworkers asked if I was nervous and in full sincerity, I was not nervous. “The only one that knows how something is supposed to go is you,” I told myself over and over again. Ingenuity solved every problem that tried to pop up.

It was a night filled with nine rounds of trivia questions ranging from “The 90s Music Scene,” to “Man’s Best Friends.” Over $1200 of prizes were given away to those in attendance. And, we even had an appearance from Montgomery’s very own Big Mo!

Brain Brawl isn’t complete without learning about the commitment of the Montgomery Education Foundation to public education. Those in attendance heard about MEF’s work in Pre-K readiness, Brain Forest Summer Learning Academy, Reading on Wheels, STARBASE Maxwell and Network Night. We could not do what we do without community partnerships.

After all the brawling, three champions prevailed.

Third Place- Team Brew Tech, competing on the behalf of Brewbaker Technology Magnet, won $750.

Washington Magnet will receive $2000, total.

Second Place- Smarter Than the Average Bear, competing on the behalf of Bear Exploration Center, won $1000.

This event could not have happened without everyone’s participation and commitment, no matter the magnitude.

I am so grateful for everyone involved for making my first Brain Brawl a success.
